  1. First I read was Prince of Thorns (and the trilogy remains my favorite of all time!) and I bought it because I like stories about young kids growing up to be badasses (or being badasses when they’re young) Ender’s Game style.
I wanna see a story from William Ancrath’s perspective!!

  2. The first book I’ve read was Prince of Thorns. I picked it because it seemed so different from other fantasy books I’ve been reading and I thought I’d like it (I was right!). I’d like to hear more about Nona or Jalan. I think that Prince of Thorns is my favorite, because with this book I discovered the grimdark world.

  3. 1. I came across Prince of Thorns and King of Thorns in a thrift shop. They were not in a very good condition, with their spines cracked and their pages folded… I read the first few sentences of Prince of Thorns, hesitated, and decided not to buy them. A week later, I went back. They were still there, as if they had waited for me. I remembered the words I had read last time, and felt drawn to the books somehow. I wondered if I would like the story. I had not really read any fantasy books before. I opened Prince of Thorns – again, read the first few sentences – again, hesitated – again… and decided to buy them both (for €3 total!). My curiosity got the better of me. A few weeks later I got Emperor of Thorns for my birthday after days of begging. Thank you, mom. I am so glad that I happened to find the books in which I can escape to a world that keeps blowing my mind…

  4. 1. Which of Mark’s books was the first one you read and what made you get a copy?

For me it was Prince Of Thorns. Saw a recommendation on Imgur about the series and it was not wrong to say the least. I flew through the trilogy then moved to Prince Of Fools trilogy and now am hooked into the Ancestor series. Mark’s writing is terrific and the characters/stories have me enthralled completely. Couldn’t get enough so had to order a copy of Road Brothers from overseas to read it 🙂

    2. Do you have a favourite book by Mark? If yes, what makes it special for you?

I couldn’t say a certain book as I loved them all. Jorg ranks highest, followed closely by Nona, and then Jalan. So many epic parts but Jorg’s Bad assery does it for me. From eating the heart to destroying a kingdom to defeating all on the battlefield. While he is far from a perfect person (the killings) I can’t help but love him.

    3. Which of his characters would you like to read about in a new short story?

They are all so good. Given Jorgs depth I would love another one for him. Still can’t get over the series and would love to hear from him again. In the meantime I anxiously await Nona’s return in Holy Sister

  5. Hi! Thanks for the contest 🙂
My first book I read from M.L. was Prince of Thorns. I initially picked it up because I’m a fan of the GrimDark genre, and in searching for a new series to devour led to this one. And I’m glad it did!
While I have enjoyed all of the novels I’ve read from him I have really loved the Red Sister and Grey Sister novels. It’s hard to pick one of the two over the other because they flow into one another seamlessly. I think I choose these because they’re written with so many strong female characters.
Finally, to answer the third question, I think a short story revolving around the older sisters’ beginnings would be wonderful. We learned a lot about Abbess Glass and I think her story would be interesting to flesh out.

  7. 1) Prince of Thorns. Probably just the cover got me in. As always. Then the setup in that first chapter. The the shock of the violence. etc.. 2) Red sister. I sell it as “best first line ever” – so much promise and such a hook. And it delivers! And who the hell has the balls to write a ‘coming of age – orphan – coming into her power story’ now? A pretty old school/cliche idea that can only be pulled off because ML writes the shit out of it. It’s a really good lesson (for those attempting the wriggly art of writing) that you don’t need to overthink the ideas, or worry if it’s original (what idea really is these days?) just take a good idea, embrace it, make it your own, and write the shit out of it. (Probably, I found the Thorns series a little convoluted with ideas – though I loved it! – I and had to put more work in as a reader to know if it was magic or tech or future tech or necromancy etc) Really shows ML’s growing confidence in writing and vastly rewarding to the reader. 3) Short story – probably and of the other ‘orphans’ from Red Sister.

  8. My first book I read was Prince of thornes, the hooded character and a throne also being dark and mystical got me.

My favorite book of marks would be grey sister, Nona continues to develop and kickass and showing her for that she is not to be messes with, she is the best character in any book I have ever read. I suffer with bipolar disorder and sometimes have an uncontrolable angry just like Nona, when I read marks books I am lost and can focus.

I would like to read more about sister apple,

  12. 1.I first read Prince of Thorns. I enjoyed the rigid purpose, unwillingness to compromise and merciless nature of Jorg.

    2. Favourite is Red Sister. The tension in Nona’s character, the violence, compassion, loyalty and driven nature make for an intriguing character. The dark backdrop of the world and magic system suit her perfectly.

    3. A short story on Tarkax-the ice spear. How he attained part of his fearsome reputation on the ice and as well as some of his pragmatic outlook.

    1. Red Sister was the first book I read and I came upon it at the library. I’d been looking for a fantasy I could sink my teeth into, and Nona definitely delivered! I have since bought the first two books in the series, as I know I will be reading them again!
    2. I’d have to say Red Sister, because it was an incredible introduction to this vivid, violent world. I also loved seeing how Nona’s relationships grew and changed.
    3. The Poisoner! I love her!

  14. Red Sister was my first Mark Lawrence Book. I’m relatively new to the fantasy genre so I hadn’t known a whole lot about it to begin with. Nona sounded like a cool character at first glance so I bought the book. Soon after I read Grey Sister which was even better than Red Sister. I recently purchased his Broken Empire trilogy and am looking forward to that as well. Can’t wait to read Holy Sister and whatever else he decided to write in that universe.

  16. My first Mark Lawrence read was Red Sister even though I’d owned Prince of Thorns and King of Thorns for a while. I’d seen Red Sister on the shelf in an expensive bookshop in Sydney (I live in the middle of nowhere and had been browsing the bookshops instead of sightseeing on a visit down there) when it was new and I couldn’t afford it and wanted it to be my first ML book and I had to wait until it came out in the cheaper mass produced paperback form to read it. I’ve since started Prince of Thorns but I haven’t been able to finish it yet. Life has got in the way. I’m enjoying it but Red Sister is my favourite still. Even though I think Grey Sister (which I also own) will probably surpass it. I love Nona and all of her friends and can’t wait to read more. I’m also looking forward to One Word Kill.

  19. 1. Which of Mark’s books was the first one you read and what made you get a copy?

The first book I read was Red Sister and it is one of my very favorite books! I saw a couple people post it on their TBR or Read shelves on GoodReads and the cover looked interesting so I read what I was about and got really interested in reading it.

    2. Do you have a favourite book by Mark? If yes, what makes it special for you?

Red Sister! And Grey Sister I probably like equally. I love Nona’s character and that she is more of an anti-hero but is very likeable all the same. I love the different ancestry lines and the way that using the path works. The friendships in both books are also the best. Nona is definitely one of my favorite book characters.

    3. Which of his characters would you like to read about in a new short story?

I would like to learn more about Markus’s story since we only see for the little time with the mule and at the academy.

  20. My first mark lawrence book was Red Sister. I just fell in love with the first scene where we see Nona watch her friends hang. It was so brutal and cruel and I knew I was gonna fall in love. My favorite book by him is Grey sister because I never thought how amazingly intricate the relationship between Nona and her friends were. The magic, the fighting.. Damn it was one hell of a book. Ever since then I have been trying to get Holy Sister ARC. In the short story I would like to see a romantic relationship developed for Nona cuz she needs some loving. Also more history.etc. Lets be real anything in this world would be welcome ❤

  21. 1. The Prince of Thorns was my first. Huge bibliophile always wanted, bored of reading about do-goody characters , a series where the main wouldn’t shy away from going in the dark to get what he wants. Needless to say I wasn’t disappointed.

    2. The King of Thorns is the best book I’ve ever read, bar none, The Justice story showing what made Jorg who he is( take all you can , give nothing back), the absence of cruelty for the sake it made it even richer. The complexity of the plot and how it all fits like a puzzle. The time jumps showing how his past affects his future , the richness of the Prose . Pure ecstasy. Also this is the first thing i bought from my first pay ( went especially for an internship- the stipend paid for it, couldn’t afford it back then) After the The Prince of Thorns blew me away I just had to buy it.

    3. A crossover between Jorg, Jalan and Nona. To see how the conflicting personalities rip each other apart and compliment each other.

If yes, what makes it special for you? I loved the storyline. Jorg and Miana meeting was great!

    3. Which of his characters would you like to read about in a new short story? Always Jorg. However. I haven’t read Red Sister yet so once I read those I may change my mind. I am currently reading The Liar’s Key.

  23. Hi Mark!
    1. The first of your books that I read was Prince of Thorns. I discovered it on a fantasy list of epic fantasy series to read. Jorg was described as the antihero, someone you shouldn’t identify with but actually do. Once through the book, I was hooked. Working on forcing my partner to join me in a reread (first go at a fantasy book for him!) as we speak!
    2. Prince of Thorns Might take the cake on a favourite. I fell in love with your writing from there! Another close second was Road Brothers…
    3. if you want to write another of those – I would love to hear more from Jorg and the crew.

    2) Again it’s Prince of Thorns because it was the first book I read and the one that introduced me to the world of Mark L.

    3) I can never decide in a story who I’d love to read more of. Jalan would be a fun read but so would Jorg and Nona. So I can’t really answer that because I’d read almost all of Mark’s books.

Prince of Thorns had me gushing over Jorg, and just the blunt savagery and badassery of that character catapulted him to one of my top literary characters. I also was infatuated by Lawrence’s prose.

Abess Glass or Sister Apple. The Sisters are so fascinating, so anything more about their lives would greatly interest me.

    2. Do you have a favourite book by Mark? If yes, what makes it special for you?

I’ve loved everything he’s written so far. The Broken Empire trilogy is one of my favourite series period. But if I had to pick one, Emperor of Thorns would have to be my favourite, with Red Sister a very close second. Emperor is special for perhaps the obvious reasons, in that it wraps up Jorg’s story in the best way possible. Jorg is one of my favourite characters and I was glad to see him have the ending he deserved.

  63. 1. Which of Mark’s books was the first one you read and what made you get a copy?
My first Mark Lawrence book was Prince of Thorns. I bought it because it had a “Look inside” option and after reading a few pages, I knew I had to finish it.

    2. Do you have a favourite book by Mark? If yes, what makes it special for you?
I think my favorite book by Mark is Red Sister, because it has one scene in it that sticks with me to this day. Of course, it’s not a pretty scene of joy and happiness, but it’s so well written that I doubt I’ll ever forget it. Frankly, I though that Grey Sister was written even better, overall, as I think his writing just keeps getting better with each book, but that scene in Red Sister…

    3. Which of his characters would you like to read about in a new short story?
I’m not much on short stories, though I did enjoy Road Brothers. I think maybe Chella, the necromancer.

  65. The first book I read by Mark was Prince of Thorns. I have no memory at this point how I stumbled across it, but I do remember being so thoroughly engaged with Jorg and his story. It was a brilliant experience, exhilarating, disturbing, thought-provoking, painful, and completely engrossing.

My favorite Mark Lawrence character? I couldn’t choose if my life depended on it.

    3. Would love a book with Taproot as the main character. Watch me!

It’s still my favorite because it was the darkest shit id ever read and it open the door to everything else is read in the future.

  68. Prince of Thorns: Amazon suggested it to me several times.

Emperor of Thorns is my personal favorite because of the incredible development we see from Jorg by the end of his story. I re-read the last two chapters probably once a week because they just hit me to my core.

I’d like to see an Abbess Glass short story.

Red Sister is by far my favourite for so many reasons but I identify with her the most would probably be one of the top ones.
I always crave to learn more on Nona.
I simply cannot get enough of that story line.

    2. Prince of Thorns. Very refreshing format, setup and plot.

    3. Would be cool (…) to read more about Nonas father on his ice capades, with perhaps some artifact hunting involved?

  73. 1. Which of Mark’s books was the first one you read and what made you get a copy?
My first book by Mark Lawrence was “Prince of Thornes”. The writing style bordering on poetry (relly quotable stuff!) struck me so much, I had to get a hardcopy, just to hold it in my hands.

    2. Do you have a favourite book by Mark? If yes, what makes it special for you?
Prince of Thornes of course – it’s bound to be, because I connect to the MC on such a deep level. I love the trilogy. Mark Lawrences writing changed over the trilogies – much. And imo it lost some of the edge it had in the beginning. So I will always cherish the first trilogy with my favorite psychopath , Jorg Ancrath.

  74. 1. Which of Mark’s books was the first one you read and what made you get a copy?
Prince of Thorns. I won a gift voucher for a book shop and walked over to the Sci Fi fantasy section. The spine art caught my attention, and the title, then the praise from Robin Hobb, and finally the blurb sealed my fate.

    2. Do you have a favourite book by Mark? If yes, what makes it special for you?
Prince of Thorns is my favourite because it was the start of something wonderful.

    3. Which of his characters would you like to read about in a new short story?
I love stories about side characters, that delve into the character and give some background to the personality that may only briefly interact with the protagonist but influence them nonetheless. Specifically I’d love to know more about the mathemagicians.

  76. The first of Mark’s books I ever read was Prince of Thorns. I had seen it in Goodreads lists, in bookstores. I’d also heard about Red Sister, and wanted to read the first novel he’d published. Of all the books I’ve read of his, Red Sister hits first on the list of my favorite of his books, with the entire of the Red Queen’s War trilogy hitting a close second. The sheer mysticism ever present below the skin of the book’s world, along with warm prose, captivating plots, and wonderful characters all called out to me, saying, “This book, right here, is something special.” And all mostly taking place in a single location too! Of all the characters to read about, I would love a story exploring Sister Kettle’s training and early years, with more lore on the Grey Books, and how she ended up with Apple. Again, a close second would be exploring the Red Queen’s story after the end of Emperor of Thorns.

  77. First book was Red Sister (my wife discovered it on audible) – she says she picked it because it sounded good and was long 😀

Favourite book was hmmmm tricky…. very tricky. I loved the The Red Queen’s War and The Broken Empire trilogies for the tone and characters and the sci-fi/fantasy flavour of magic (which actually made sense!). But also love the The Book of the Ancestor series. I’m going to go for Holy Sister for the simple reason that I haven’t read it yet 🙂

And I would like to read a short story about Sister Apple I think.

    2. King of Thorns is my favourite just seeing Jorg defend Renar, how he had everything planned out, his cunning, and really him becoming this force that looked like nothing could stop him. The last lines of the book are still my favourite lines in any book ever!!!
“A Dark time comes. My time. If it offends you. Stop Me.” Still sends chills down my spine.

3.I would love a short story about Snorri’s younger years. About his battles or raids he may have gone on. He was such a great character and I was always rooting for the Northman.

  79. Hi,

My first book was a Dutch translation of Prince of Thorns and to be honest I finished but it wasn’t for me. I bought it because I wanted to try something new. Years later I read During the Dance and was blown away. Such a beautiful tale!
My favorite will probably be Holy Sister but right now if you force me to choose I’d go for Red Sister because that’s where I met Nona.
I’d read a short story on any character from the Book of the Acestor really…
    Fingers crossed!

    Best. Decision. Ever.
2- Hard to point a favorite… I really, really like all of Mark’s books. If you put a gun on my face, I’d probably pick King of Thorns. I like the journey with Jorg and the middle of the road was special to me.
3- I would enjoy more background and tales on dr Taproot. It would be a way to look deeper into the history of the Thorns’ world.

    Good luck to everyone!

  83. 1. I first read Prince of Thorns. I saw it mentioned a few times on Reddit and decided to give it a go when it was on offer, and I loved it.
    2. Hard to pick a favourite, but I think I’ll say The Wheel of Osheim. It really builds on the world of the Broken Empire, on just how broken it truly is, not just a fractured political landscape but the very fabric of the universe. It takes the Red Queen’s War triolgy on arguably a darker turn than the Broken Empire trilogy, which is saying something, and really plays with questions about reality.
    3. Not so much a specific character, but I love the tower of the Mathmagicians and I think it’d be awesome to see a bit more of how their particular brand of magic can be used to view and influence the world.

I could happily have more than just a trilogy and after finishing Grey Sister I’m itching to read Holy Sister I’m obsessed ahhh. This series is by far my favourite and I can’t wait to see what Mark Lawrence will give us next
(I just hope it’s more bad ass women and more amazing world building)

The first Mark Lawrence book I read was prince of thorns. I happened to stumble across it on amazon, it caught my eye & I thought why not. I order the next two half way through!

My favorite would have to be Red Sister. Nona’s blunt & headfirst attitude to everything is my favorite. She’s one of those characters you can’t help but root for.

I wouldn’t mind reading a short story about Sister Apple!

Prince of Thorns. Honestly, I knew nothing at all about the book or the author but the cover just catched my eye and… here I am 🙂

    2. Do you have a favourite book by Mark? If yes, what makes it special for you?
Prince of Thorns is my favourite because it was the first and beginnings always have an special kind of appeal to me.

    3. Which of his characters would you like to read about in a new short story?
I’d love to have a view of the world from Zole’s perspective.

  88. I read Prince of Thorns first. I decided to start at the beginning of his writing. I picked it up because I saw his Ancester series everywhere.

My favorite is Gray Sister. Not sure it is special as much as I really enjoy it.

It would be awesome to have a short story collection for the Ancestor trilogy like Road Brothers. I would love the back story on all the Nuns and novices!

  89. The first book I read was Prince of Thorns. I picked up King of Thorns in Ottokars bookshop in Chatham (before it became a Waterstones) and was intrigued by the blurb which seemed to suggest that the main character was not actually a good guy. I was curious enough to buy Prince of Thorns to see how the series started, and then devoured KIng of Thorns and fortunately did not have long to wait for Emperor of Thorns.

My favourite story – well, I like Red Sister a great deal because I have a fondness for feisty female characters and in Red Sister you get a whole convent full of them. But pound for pound power of writing, it would be his 2000 word short story “During The Dance” full of feels.

A short story about a character? I’d like a story about Miana, Jorg’s wife who strikes me as a sort of young Eleanor of Aquitaine. I particularly liked the present of a steel hard staff of wood she gave him in Emperor of Thorns – proof of their mutual understanding and a partnership more effective than love..

A favourite? Probably The Liars Key. I really enjoyed the Snorri character. His seemd abled to see the Prince for what he was, but he never let that cloud his judgement or he how he treated him. He was always there to help the prince to see the best in himself, even when the prince could not.

Which leads into answer 3. Snorri is my easy choice for another story.

Since I finished Grey Sister and it’s still buzzing in my brain, I’ll pick that as my favourite for the moment. The characters are what made it special, particularly Sister Kettler, Abbess Glass and Clera. I have a soft spot for Clera and her complexities, so I think I’d pick her as the character I’d love to read a short story about.

    2. It’s a tie between the Liar’s Key and Wheel of Osheim. Jalan makes them special. Jalan makes everything special. He’s my favourite character ever.

    3. Any of the “sworn” characters. I’d like to see more about how that works.
