I’ve only read 3 of your books (thoroughly enjoyed each one) and just finished “Prince of Thorns” this evening. I was struck by this: “Maybe we’re born new each dawn, a little changed, a little further on our own road. When enough days stand between you and the person you were, you’re strangers. Maybe that’s what growing up is. Maybe I’ve grown up.”

“Life has ways of getting under your skin, spoiling your fun with too much information. Youth is truly the happiest time where we roll in the bliss of ignorance.” Absolutely love the books, like all of em. And they keep getting better.

“You soon learn there’s no elegance or dignity in death if you spend time in the castle kitchens. You learn how ugly it is, and how good it tastes.” Prince Of Thorns

Just one of the many powerful lines in that series.

The one that gets me through every day at work: “Hate will keep you alive where love fails.” Congratulations.

I think maybe we die every day. Maybe we’re born new each dawn, a little changed, a little further on our own road. When enough days stand between you and the person you were, you’re strangers. Maybe that’s what growing up is.

“Let a man play chess, and tell him that every pawn is his friend. Let him think both bishops holy. Let him remember happy days in the shadows of his castles. Let him love his queen. Watch him loose them all.”

“The last tick of a clock can yank the deepest sleeper from their dreams. The silence is a shock after all the tocks and ticks that came before. The final featherweight of effort is wrung from the clock-spring, all of its windings spent. The second hand’s measured beat has counted away eternity, and now it pauses. And the sleeper wakes, aching for the missing beat. So many things are not apparent until they’re gone. So much beauty unseen until it breaks.” – from Gunlaw.

While a lot of quotes from the Broken Empire where deep and Poetic, the quotes from Prince of Fools are funnier,

“I’m a liar and a cheat and a coward, but I will never, ever, let a friend down. Unless of course not letting them down requires honesty, fair play, or bravery.”

I was reading “The Liar’s Key” at a particularly difficult time in my life. This quote sent me into a jag of ugly crying. Love your books.

“Sixty beats of a heart would be enough. If I could hold them. Let them know I came for them no matter what stood in my way. It would be enough. Sixty beats of a heart past that door would outweigh sixty years in this world without them.”

This passage stuck with me above all others from the very moment I read it.

“It’s the silence that scares me. It’s the blank page on which I can write my own fears. The spirits of the dead have nothing on it. The dead one tried to show me hell, but it was a pale imitation of the horror I can paint on the darkness in a quiet moment.”
